New Thrift Store Open on MLK

September 20th, 2016

The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults has opened a new thrift store.

The new store, which will soon also have consignment services, is located on the 300 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard, where the Dollar Store used to be.

The nonprofit, which serviced more than 45,000 clients last year, has a variety of programs, including those that help domestic violence victims, foster children, senior citizens and other residents.

Grants and donations help fund the organization, and some services-called sustainability services-also provide revenue. For example, client interpretation services for the deaf come with a small fee.

The thrift store will help sustain the organization, marketing and public relations manager Bergen Aldahir said.

“What we are focused on is creating sustainable sources of revenue that can support our programs, and having a retail store helps us do that,” Aldahir said. All the items are “gently worn” and come at a range of prices, she said.

FCA had another store in Hixson before this, but it needed a revamp, Aldahir said.

And the MLK area is starting to see growth, so leaders thought it would be an ideal spot.

“We felt like it would be a perfect location,” she said, noting its proximity to UTC. “It’s a hot area. We wanted to be able to draw foot traffic.”

The store is open from Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
