Every day at the Rape Crisis Center, I meet neighbors from our community who have endured the trauma of sexual assault. And every day, I am moved by their courage as they take the first step toward healing.
One in five people in the United States will experience rape or attempted rape in their lifetime.
Last year alone, we supported 221 survivors and 122 of them bravely underwent forensic medical exams. This represents a 26% increase over three years. These are not just numbers. These are our friends, family members, and neighbors.
In Hamilton and Marion Counties, Partnership for Families, Children and Adults is the only place where adults can receive a forensic medical exam. Our trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners provide compassionate care, whether at the hospital or in our center. We also train medical professionals and operate the region’s only 24/7 Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence crisis hotline. When someone calls for help, they call us.
But our work doesn’t stop there. We stand with survivors through the difficult journey of court and legal proceedings. We advocate on their behalf, provide free counseling, and walk with them every step of the way toward healing.
Yet, there is a moment after the exam that feels especially difficult. Survivors often leave without their clothing, as it may be taken as evidence. With your support, we can provide a “care package” of comfortable clothing, toiletries, a fleece blanket, water, snacks, and basic medical supplies—all packed with dignity and compassion.
Your gift also provides safety tools like cell phones and security cameras to help protect survivors once they return home.
