In 1995, twenty-seven compassionate individuals formed a task force to create support services for victims of sexual violence. Together, they raised over $700,000 to open the “Sexual Assault Crisis and Resource Center,” known today as Partnership’s Rape Crisis Center.
This task force, chaired by June McEwen, included Andrea Adams, Jeannine Alday, Jamie Bergmann, Tobey Carpenter (Executive Director), Rick Carrigan, Anita Chastain, Dr. Kay Chitty, Helen Cooper, Amos Croft, Leslie Davenport, Penni Dickerson, Sally Durand, Mitzie Fulton, Gayle Haberkam (Director and Head Nurse), Jim Hammond, Neil Herrick, Anne Johnson, Joselyn Pop, Mary Price, Louis Prosterman, Mary Neill Southerland, Eva Sajay, Barrett Taylor, Jerri Underwood, Sister Betty Vannucci and Lynda Whittimore.
As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this essential service, we honor these men and women who worked to create a place of safety, advocacy and healing for so many.
The Need Grows
Last year, our Rape Crisis Centers saw 227 victims and we expect to hit that number again this year. This represents a 26% increase over the last three years. And while elderly homeless women is a growing demographic, on one day last fall, five women came within a 24-hour period with ages that ranged from 17 to 72; one was deaf and needed our Deaf Services.
As we look forward, will you partner with us to expand this vital service? Our goal this year is $250,000 for new furniture and much needed supplies.
